Female condoms are often made of polyurethane or synthetic nitrile rubber, offering softness, durability, and hypoallergenic properties. The design includes two flexible rings: an inner ring that anchors inside the vagina to cover the cervix, and an outer ring that remains outside to protect the vulva, creating a physical barrier. They are suitable for both vaginal and anal intercourse.

Mechanism of Action

Advantages:

• It is a female-dominated method for contraception and disease prevention.
• It can be inserted 8 hours before sexual intercourse without affecting spontaneity.
• It is suitable for use during menstruation, pregnancy, and postpartum periods.

Disadvantages: 

• It might reduce clitoral stimulation or cause friction noise (which can be alleviated with lubricants).
• If not inserted correctly, there is a risk of it coming out or breaking.
