What is the viscosity of a lubricant?

(1) Dynamic Viscosity:

It is a measure of the internal friction of a liquid flowing under a certain shear stress. It is defined as the ratio of the shear stress applied to the flowing liquid to the shear rate, denoted by the symbol η. Its legal unit of measurement is Pa•s or MPa•s.

(2) Kinematic Viscosity:

It is defined as the ratio of the dynamic viscosity of a liquid to its density at the same temperature, denoted by the symbol ν. Its legal unit of measurement is m²/s, but mm²/s is commonly used.

(3) Engler Viscosity:

It is defined as the ratio of the time (s) required for 200 mL of liquid to flow through an Engler viscometer under specified temperature conditions to the time (s) required for the same volume of distilled water to flow through an Engler viscometer at 20°C, denoted by the symbol °E.

(4) Saybolt Viscosity (commonly denoted by SSU):

It is defined as the time required for 60 mL of liquid to flow out of a Saybolt viscometer at a specified temperature. Saybolt viscosity is further divided into Saybolt viscosity and Saybolt heavy oil viscosity (commonly represented by SSF), both of which are legally measured in seconds (s).

What are the four classifications of lubricants?

Oils, Greases, Dry Lubricants, and Penetrating Lubricant.
